Tyler Graves is a trumpet player and educator in Cleveland, Ohio. He recently returned home to Ohio from San Francisco, California, after living there for nearly 10 years. While in San Francisco, he could be heard playing with The Golden Gate Park Band, the Oakland Municipal Band, and various orchestras and big bands, such as Starduster Orchestra and The Big Easy Big Band. He also performed with New Orleans’ style brass bands, such as the Brass Animals and the BDE Brass Band, with performances at Warrior’s NBA games for over 5 years, and at the Official 2026 Super Bowl Pregame Party. Tyler enjoys collaborating with fellow musicians and in May 2019 when he and fellow local musicians provided music, personal arrangements, and compositions, for Academy of Art University's annual fashion show.
Tyler prides himself on being a well-rounded player, as well as an active music educator. In California, he lead the College of Marin’s Brass Band for over 5 years, where he initiated a concert program of all new music, and arranged music for a concert that accompanied to two silent films. In addition to the Brass Band, he taught courses in Classical music history, the history of Rock, Pop, and Jazz, and Theory 1 at the College of Marin. Tyler also worked with the music departments at Redwood High School, Tamalpias High School, and the Miller Creek School District. Before moving to San Francisco in August of 2016 , Tyler was performing and teaching in Cincinnati, Ohio and in spring of 2015 he was the trumpet professor at Ohio Northern University. In June of 2015, he had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania, to spread music through performance and education and participated in a conservation effort surrounding Mpingo trees. Tyler has been honored to perform in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center/Juilliard, and at the 2012 Ravinia Festival. Tyler graduated from Miami University with his Master’s degree in 2013, where he studied with Professor James Olcott and held a graduate assistantship. He performed with the faculty brass quintet and was a member of the trumpet ensemble, which performed at the 2013 ITG Conference. Tyler obtained his Bachelor of Music in Performance at Ohio Northern University. There, he studied trumpet with Dr. David Kosmyna, had the opportunity to perform two concertos. Tyler was also a brother of Phi Mu Alpha and Kappa Kappa Psi. Tyler enjoys the outdoors, relaxing with his wife, Holly, and two cats, and appreciates all forms of art, especially photography. |
